Emerging Strategies and Progress Toward Pay Equity – Webinar

Tuesday, October 27th, 2:00 – 3:15 pm EDT
This webinar is the fourth in a series hosted by the Women’s Bureau exploring key policies and programs for working women. This installment will focus on state and federal actions to eliminate pay secrecy and promote pay equity through rule-making, legislation, and additional initiatives.

Women make up nearly half of the U.S. labor force and are a growing number of breadwinners in their families. In 2014, women who worked full time and year-round earned seventy-nine cents for every dollar their male counterparts earned. The pay gap is perpetuated by a number of issues, including pay secrecy policies that prevent women workers from identifying unlawful pay discrepancies in their workplaces. In an effort to eliminate pay secrecy and promote pay equity, federal and state governments have passed legislation and implemented additional requirements and tools to promote pay equity.

The webinar will feature Jennifer Reisch, Legal Director at Equal Rights Advocates, who will discuss the recently passed California Fair Pay Act, one of the most comprehensive pay equity laws in the country. Debra Fitzpatrick, Director of the Center on Women and Gender at the University of Minnesota, will provide an overview of the Women’s Economic Security Act, as well some background on pay equity in Minnesota. And Debra Carr, Policy Division Director, Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) will describe OFCCP’s final rule that will promote pay transparency for the more than 28 million employees of Federal contractors and subcontractors.
