Mentoring Program

2009 Mentoring Program Forms

Federally Employed Women (FEW) offers an opportunity for the National Board of Directors, Regional Managers and Chapter Presidents to participate in a six-month Mentoring Program pilot. The timeline for the pilot is July 2009–January 2010, with 15 couples (15 mentors and 15 mentees) taking part in the pilot program, after which the program will be open to the entire FEW membership.

Orientation and training will be provided to ensure that mentors and mentees share a common understanding of each one’s roles and responsibilities and help mentees develop realistic expectations of what they can accomplish. This training will be held during the Chapter Presidents Leadership Forum at the 2009 National Training Program in July.

During the socialization process, biographical information for the mentors and mentees will be posted on the FEW website, allowing the mentees to review bios of the mentors, make their selection and prioritize the top three mentors of choice. We will work to match individuals based on the goals of the mentee, seeking an appropriate partner for them, one who has the background and interest to help them achieve their developmental goals. Of course, qualified mentors need to be available in order to be matched.

Mentoring takes a commitment of time on the part of both the mentors and mentees. It is very important that if you choose to become mentoring partners, in order to help the mentees achieve their objectives, for the partnership, that you are committed to the program. Mentoring relationships are different, and it's up to each couple to determine the dynamics. Some partners meet every week for coffee or attend professional events, while others meet once a month or communicate via e-mail.
